In these two pictures we are making college  flags for AVID. We got to decide which college  flag we wanted to make.We had to include the mascot, college colors and the college name.We actually got to use a piece of paper that was shaped like a flag. We had a lot of fun making these for AVID. If you do not know what AVID is, it's supposed to prepare us for college. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.

Next Week's Update

On next week, we will discuss the importance of the Pony Express and the Transcontinental Railroad during the 1800s.  We will discover why the railroad was important, who built the railroad, and its impact on the Native Americans way of life.
The quiz planned for Wednesday, September 30 will cover the challenges encountered by early settlers on the various trails to the west.
In English Language Arts, we will discuss nouns and tall tales. We will also integrate read alouds and comprehension selections on westward expansion.  As for writing, students have been working on their final drafts about their most "memorable moments."  Ask your child what he/she decided was his/her most "memorable moment."

Dates:
Monday, September 28 is "Military Monday." Students are asked to wear red, white and blue to show support for our military parents.  We are wearing college colors on Friday! Check the calendar!

Class Updates

Hello Everyone,
Things are really moving in our class. Today students were comparing characters with the use of Patricia Polacco books. They did a great job partner reading and recording character traits.  These students really love to read.  We will continue with the comparison of story plots on next week. Take a look at these awesome pairs!

Beginning next week, students will blog events in the classroom.  Everyone will get a chance to share classroom events.  The blog will be sent out every Friday.  Thursday, September 24 has been set aside for parent conferences.  If you cannot attend on September 24, Mrs. Nelson and I are available at 8:20 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  We can conference after school Tuesday- Thursday, if we have prior notice.
