ELA This week students will complete an assessment on similes, metaphors, personification, and alliteration. They will also practice writing summaries and when to use commas in a sentence. We will wrap up the week with a "cold read" about Alaska.
Social Studies
On last week, students discussed how the United States obtained Alaska and Hawaii. This week students will discuss which territories the United States gained after fighting the Spanish American war. There will be a quiz on what they learned about Alaska and Hawaii on Thursday. Ask your child what he or she learned about Alaska and Hawaii on last week. If students can discuss the content, learning is taking place.
AVID
We will be cleaning out our binders for the next two weeks. This will be done in school. Please do not allow your child to discard any material without teacher permission.
ELA On next week Thursday, students will present their book reports. Each child checked out a book before the Christmas break to read for their book report. For the report, students will present problem, solution, and details about their book from one of the character's point of view. Students can use props, music, costumes, etc.... to enhance their presentation. They cannot speak longer than three minutes. The rubric for this project is attached. Students have seen the rubric and will bring home a copy on Tuesday.
Soc. Stu. We will discuss the purchase of Hawaii and Alaska. We will also discuss the causes of the Spanish American war.
AVID Check your child's binder and supply bags. This is a great time to update your child's school supplies.
