A Few Updates!



ELA
This week students will participate in writing conferences.  We will discuss their strengths and weaknesses while reviewing each child's district writing. Students will also compare with adjectives and they will complete a Wordly Wise Lesson 9 assessment on Wednesday. 


Soc. Stu.

We are done with World War I and students will complete an assessment on the Spanish-American War, Panama Canal, and World War I tomorrow (Tuesday).  Students have a study guide and notes to review.  Our next topic of study is the Roaring Twenties. Ms. Elliott, my student teacher, has a fun activity planned for this topic. 


AVID
A parent checklist for binders will be sent home for you to review with your child on Tuesday.  Review the checklist with your child, initial the designated area, and have your child give the checklist to his/her teacher. 





Field Study
We will be taking a trip to Patriot's Point on April 22.  Patriot's Point is located in Charleston, SC. On this field study, students will participate in labs which covers a few fifth grade science standards. They will also discuss the role of the Navy the military during the various American wars.  The cost of the trip is $40 for students and chaperons.  Mrs. Morgan's class is in need of one more chaperon. Please send in your child's permission form and at least $15 as soon as possible!

We have a many talented girls and boys in our classes!

This Week's Update!

Image result for writing clipartI'm back on track so here are a few updates for this week!

ELA
Students will edit and revise their D.A.R.E. essays they began on last week.  They will also learn how to use transitional phrases and words in their writings.  Finally, students will practice writing text related questions with the use of an AVID Weekly informational graphic.



Soc. Stu.
Students will create a one-pager for the Panama Canal.  They will create a flip book in order to explain the programs created by Theodore Roosevelt and other progressives. Students will end the week by discussing why the United States participated in World War I.




Valentine's Day
We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, February 12, 2016.  Your child has been given a class list so that he/she can exchange Valentines. There is no need to send in any additional snacks.




Field Study
Fifth graders will be taking a trip to Patriot's Point in Charleston on April 22.  Please take note of the payment schedule we placed in last week's newsletter.  Take a moment to read, complete, and return your child's permission slip if you haven't already done so.  Mrs. Morgan's class is in need of chaperons for the field study.  If you are interested, contact Mrs. Morgan.
